The best places to see magnolia and cherry blossoms in Vienna

The first blooming magnolias and cherry trees are a sure sign every year: Spring has arrived in Vienna. For a short time, they transform the city with their pink and white blossoms, making Vienna feel instantly warmer and more vibrant.
But where can you find the best blossom spots in Vienna? Which places are perfect for a stroll or some dreamy photos? Over the past few years, I’ve explored countless bloom locations and am excited to share my favorite spots to fully enjoy spring in Vienna.

When do magnolias and cherry trees bloom in Vienna?
The exact blooming period is generally hard to predict. While writing this article, I tried to estimate a rough time frame based on my experience from the past few years, but it’s almost impossible because the blooming times have varied so much!
Between 2021 and 2024, the blooming time was roughly as follows:
- Magnolias: Early March to early April
- Early cherry blossoms & purple-leaf plum: Early to late March
- Late-blooming Japanese cherry blossoms: Early to late April
As you can see, the start of the blooming season can shift by 3 – 4 weeks depending on the temperature. The duration of the bloom also depends heavily on the weather. Full bloom usually lasts only a few days to a week, but strong rain or wind can make it even shorter. Not all trees bloom at the same time either, as their location also plays a role.

The Best Places to See Magnolia Blossoms in Vienna
Here are some of the most beautiful spots to admire magnolias in Vienna. Of course, there are many more, but these are some of my personal favorites.
Stadtgartendirektion near Stadtpark

Just outside the gates of Stadtpark stands one of Vienna’s oldest and most impressive magnolia trees – it’s over 115 years old! Every year, it’s a special moment for me when it’s in full bloom. As soon as the first blossoms open, I know: The blooming season has begun!
ADDRESS:
Stadtgartendirektion, Heumarkt/corner Johannesgasse, 1030 Vienna
Sigmund-Freud-Park/Votive Church

Probably one of the most famous magnolia trees in Vienna! It may be smaller than the one at Stadtgartendirektion, but it makes for a stunning photo spot with the Votive Church in the background.
ADDRESS:
Sigmund-Freud-Park, Universitätsring, 1010 Vienna
Setagayapark

A small but particularly beautiful park and a great spot for your spring photos. Here, you’ll find magnolia trees with white blossoms and one with unique pink flowers. And the best part? Cherry trees also bloom here, which I’ll highlight further below.
ADDRESS:
Setagayapark, Hohe Warte, 1190 Vienna
Tip: During peak bloom, the park can get extremely crowded (yes, sometimes there’s even a line at the entrance). If you want to enjoy some peace and quiet, visit early on a weekday. Even on weekends, if you arrive very early, you’ll likely only encounter a few photographers capturing the blossoms.
Türkenschanzpark

The magnolia by the pond in this park in the 18th district usually blooms a little later than those in the city center, creating a particularly idyllic setting.
Tip: While you’re here, it’s worth exploring the rest of the park and a walk through the charming adjacent Cottage Quarter is also a great idea!
ADDRESS:
Türkenschanzpark, 1180 Vienna
The best way to find the magnolia is to enter either at Max-Emanuel-Straße/Rimplergasse or Max-Emanuel-Straße/Türkenschanzplatz and then walk straight ahead, but you can also enter at all of the many other entrances to get there.
Other Places to See Magnolias in Vienna

- white magnolia: Schönbrunn Palace Park (near the Palm House)
- white magnolia: Burggarten
- pink magnolia: Boku University, Gregor-Mendel-Straße 33, 1180 Vienna
The Most Beautiful Places to See Cherry Blossoms in Vienna
In addition to the stunning magnolias, Vienna also has many great spots to admire cherry blossoms. The first pink blossoms of the year usually belong to early-blooming cherries with delicate, light pink flowers and to a tree species I long mistook for cherry trees: the purple-leaf plum. Their blossoms look so similar that I’ve included them in this list – after all, what we’re really after is those beautiful pink blooms! These trees can bloom as early as the beginning of March or sometimes not until the end of the month.
If you’re looking for the dense, fluffy cherry blossoms, you’ll have to wait a little longer. These Japanese cherry blossoms usually bloom from early to late April, turning entire avenues into a pink sea of flowers. Their blossoms are fuller and almost fluffy, making them especially photogenic!
Here are the best places in Vienna to find these beautiful trees:
1. The Early-Blooming Ornamental Cherry (and the Purple-Leaf Plum)
Stadtpark

Near the entrance on Weiskirchnerstraße (by the MAK museum), you’ll find some relatively early-blooming cherry trees, which are always a popular photo spot. I also love the tree by the pond (a purple-leaf plum), which blooms shortly after them. You’ll find it on the left side of the pond, about halfway along, if you enter from the MAK. As you walk through the park, you’ll discover a few more blooming trees.
ADDRESS:
Stadtpark, 1030 Vienna
Setagayapark

In addition to magnolias, you’ll also find cherry blossoms in this beautiful Japanese park in the 19th district.
ADDRESS:
Setagayapark, Hohe Warte, 1190 Vienna
Burggarten

There are also some beautifully blooming trees in the Burggarten. Next to the white magnolia, the pink-blossoming trees create a stunning scene with the Hofburg in the background.
ADDRESS:
Burggarten, 1010 Vienna
Ruprechts Church (Ruprechtskirche)

On the square below Vienna’s oldest still-standing church, you’ll also find a few beautifully blooming pink trees.
Tip: For photos, it’s best to visit in the afternoon, otherwise, you’ll be shooting against the sun.
ADDRESS:
Square below Ruprechtskirche,
between Franz-Josefs Kai 29 and Morzinplatz 1, 1010 Vienna
More places
- Schwarzenbergplatz next to Hochstrahlbrunnen (fountain)
- Rathauspark (City Hall Park)
- Währingerstraße right beside Sigmund-Freud-Park
- Blaasstraße, 1190 Vienna

2. The Late-Blooming Japanese Cherry Blossoms
Franz-von-Assisi-Church

The small cherry tree alley in the square in front of this extraordinary church looks absolutely dreamy. But to be honest, the area around Mexikoplatz isn’t exactly one of Vienna’s most charming corners. Still, it’s worth a visit, if only for the church’s impressive architecture.
Tip: For the best view of the church beyond the cherry blossoms, cross Handelskai towards the Danube. From there, you can admire it in all its glory.
ADDRESS:
Mexikoplatz 12, 1020 Vienna
Hainburger Weg

In the 3rd district, hidden between residential buildings and just a few steps from the Schlachthausgasse metro station, lies an unexpected discovery: a beautiful cherry blossom alley. It’s still somewhat of a hidden gem and offers a stunning pink backdrop away from the well-known cherry blossom hotspots.
ADDRESS:
Hainburger Weg/corner Kleingasse, 1030 Vienna
Donaupark

During cherry blossom season, a visit to Donaupark is especially worthwhile! While the park is a bit outside the city center, you can enjoy a lovely walk and even combine your visit with a trip to the Donauturm (Danube Tower) for a great view over Vienna.
The best cherry trees can be found at Arbeiterstrandbadstraße 122C (“Skatepark Donauturm” in your navigation). If you continue along the path, you’ll find two more particularly beautiful trees near the tennis courts. If you start at Chinarestaurant Sichuan (Arbeiterstrandbadstraße 122) and follow the path, you’ll come across two small trees that make for a stunning photo spot with the Danube Tower in the background.
Cherry trees are scattered throughout the park, but since Donaupark is quite large, bring some time if you want to go on a “blossom hunt”!
ADDRESS:
Donaupark, 1220 Vienna
Peace Pagoda
Located even farther out, the Peace Pagoda is not the easiest to reach by public transport. Still, it’s an extraordinary place you wouldn’t necessarily expect to find in Vienna. It’s especially beautiful during cherry blossom season when the trees in front of it are in full bloom, enhancing the peaceful atmosphere of the place even more.
Tip: While you’re there, a short walk or bike ride along the Danube is well worth it, perfect for soaking in the tranquility.
ADDRESS:
Hafenzufahrtsstraße F, 1020 Vienna
Raimannstraße

In the 14th district, quite far from the center, you’ll find a true sea of pink blossoms, it’s an absolutely breathtaking sight!
Tip: To make the trip worthwhile, visit one of Vienna’s most unique churches afterwards, the Otto Wagner Church at Steinhof. It’s only about a 10-minute walk through the Otto Wagner area and is truly worth seeing. A stroll through the Steinhofgründe afterward is also lovely and makes for a perfect outing.
ADDRESS:
Raimannstraße, between Flötzersteig and Käthe-Jonas-Weg, 1140 Vienna
Setagayapark

Of course, the beautiful Japanese cherry trees bloom in this Japanese garden as well!
Tip: Just outside the park entrance on Hohe Warte, you’ll find another stunning cherry tree.
Blumengärten Hirschstetten

This garden, located on the outskirts of the city, is my absolute favorite spot in Vienna during tulip season. However, you’ll also find some cherry trees here!
ADDRESS:
Blumengärten Hirschstetten, 1220 Wien
South entrance: Quadenstraße 15
North entrance: Oberfeldgasse opposite 41
West entrance: Spargelfeldstraße opposite 75
