The best small bookstores in Vienna – my favorite places to browse
Vienna is home to so many beautiful bookstores, from big well-known ones to small, truly special shops. And it’s exactly those smaller ones I love the most. I could spend hours browsing there, and you can immediately feel how much love for books goes into these places.
That’s why in this post, I’m taking you to my favorite small bookstores in Vienna and showing you why they feel like little havens to me.
Buchhandlung Analog

I discovered Buchhandlung Analog a while ago during a walk through Otto-Bauer-Gasse in the 6th district. The street itself is lovely for a little stroll, right by Mariahilfer Straße, with cute cafés, a few shops, and this very unique bookstore. Back then, I spotted a book in the window display, went inside and since then, Analog has been one of my favorite bookstores in Vienna.
The shop itself is, in the best possible way, filled with books. They line the beautiful old spiral staircase, are stacked on tables, and tucked into corners you only notice on a second look. It’s a real paradise for browsing and discovering something new. I also love all the little details that make the space so special. Have you ever seen a bicycle used as a bookshelf? And sometimes you’re even offered a cup of tea when you walk in, which I think is such a lovely touch.

As for the selection: bestsellers, novels, thrillers, young adult and children’s books, English titles, illustrated books, unique authors and books you won’t find everywhere, it’s a really beautiful mix.
The team is also very friendly, and you can tell they truly know their books. If you’d like, you’ll get great recommendations and might even end up chatting about books for a while. They also regularly host events like readings.
For me, Analog is one of those places where I like to take my time and where I usually leave with one more book than I originally planned.

Mi’s Booknook

This bookstore has only been around since late 2025, and I have to say, I completely fell in love with it. Visually, it’s almost the exact opposite of Analog. The space is bright and calm, everything has its place, and yet it still feels incredibly cozy. I especially love the themed tables. When I first visited, it was all about Bridgerton vibes, with candlesticks and matching books, so beautifully done that I couldn’t resist buying a special Bridgerton edition.
Again, it’s the little details that make it so special: the reading chairs, colorful flowers, the decorated staircase. You can tell a lot of thought has gone into everything. The owners are incredibly kind, explain the concept right away, and take their time to give recommendations.
The selection focuses very clearly on feel-good literature. You won’t find thrillers here, instead, it’s romance, fantasy, novels, and cozy mysteries, usually with happy endings. It’s all about celebrating the joy of reading. Books are available in both German and English, and if there’s an English edition, you’ll find both versions side by side on the shelf.

My absolute highlight, though, are the window niches. You can sit there with a book and a drink, read in peace, and just lose track of time for a while. Tea, a good book, and cake, what more could you want? And if you don’t have a book with you, you can even borrow one from a special shelf (when you order a drink).

Hafi Books + Coffee

This bookstore is located on Rechte Wienzeile, very close to Naschmarkt. From the outside, it’s not immediately obvious that it’s a bookstore, so it’s quite easy to walk past it, which would really be a shame.
The focus here is on English-language literature. There’s only a small selection in German, but a very exciting mix of fiction and non-fiction, well-known titles as well as books I (at least) hadn’t seen anywhere else. You can tell the selection is very carefully curated, with attention given to smaller authors from around the world and independent publishers. I’ve discovered books here that I probably would have never found otherwise. Besides books, there are also magazines, cards, T-shirts, and (a personal weakness of mine) very beautiful notebooks.
Visually, Hafi Books is also something quite special and completely different from many other bookstores in Vienna: colorful, creative, stylish, and very relaxed. And even if you think the first room is all there is, make sure to keep going into the next room and don’t hesitate to walk past the bar. There you’ll find another section with design books, cookbooks, and photography books.
What I also really like: Hafi Books isn’t just a bookstore, it’s also a café but not with a separate seating area. You simply sit among the books or by the window (my favorite spot). They serve coffee, tea, matcha, and chai latte, and I find it so relaxing to not only browse but also stay a bit longer and enjoy the atmosphere.
They also regularly host events like book presentations, readings, workshops, and even a stitch & knit afterwork.

Buchhandlung List

This bookstore is located in one of my absolute favorite areas in Vienna, the Servitenviertel. I love walking through the park by Palais Liechtenstein and continuing towards Servitengasse. And along the way, I always pass this bookstore and can hardly ever walk by without stepping in to see what’s new.
Here you’ll find everything a reader could wish for: novels, fantasy, romance, literary fiction, non-fiction, and also a lovely selection of English-language books. What’s especially unique is that they also have sections with French and Italian books.
Visually, it’s exactly how I imagine a classic bookstore: shelves up to the ceiling, books everywhere you look, and those ladders that let you reach the very top shelves (I would love to have something like that at home). It’s such a nice place to browse, and I always discover something new.
They also host really great events regularly, from readings and book presentations to signings. I especially love formats like a “witchy bookstore night” or the English book club that meets here. And if you need advice, the staff are more than happy to help (also in the different languages offered). I’m not alone in this opinion either, Buchhandlung List was even named one of the “Best Bookstores in Austria” in 2025.

Buchcafé Melange

A very special bookstore that I discovered (far too late) is Buchcafé Melange on the outer Mariahilfer Straße, even though it’s about to celebrate its 10th anniversary. A small neighborhood bookstore with a café, it’s exactly the kind of place I love.
Yes, admittedly, you won’t find endless rows of shelves like in the big chains. But I don’t miss that at all. On the contrary, I actually find it really pleasant that everything is more manageable. You can take your time, look at everything in peace, you’re not overwhelmed by choice and you still discover something new every time. And of course, you rarely leave empty-handed.
The selection is beautifully curated: alongside many novels, there are also non-fiction books, children’s books, cookbooks, and small gift books, a mix of current titles and ones you might not see everywhere. There’s even a shelf with Serbian, Bosnian/Croatian, and Turkish titles, as well as a small selection of English books. I’ve also found little extras like tea, bookmarks, pens, and small gift ideas. They regularly host readings and book presentations as well.

And then there’s the café. There are different seating options throughout the shop: by the front window, in a reading chair, or on the cozy couch in the second room. On the menu you’ll find coffee, tea, matcha latte, and various cakes, muffins, and cookies. Basically the perfect excuse to buy a book and stay a little longer.

Das Buchkontor

Also located in the 15th district, in the Nibelungenviertel, is Das Buchkontor. And I have to say, the children’s book section impressed me the most. I can so easily imagine kids discovering their love of reading here. It’s incredibly cute and thoughtfully designed, with low shelves for little ones, a cozy reading couch with a canopy, and a very special chandelier. There are also regular free reading sessions and book presentations for children, while parents can browse in peace.
But the rest of the shop is also very welcoming. There’s a wide range of genres, plus a special section with Spanish-language books, as well as small beautiful items and gift ideas like notebooks, postcards, and wrapping paper.

In addition to children’s events, they regularly host readings and book presentations. For adults, these are ticketed (€7), but they include a glass of wine, and you can chat with the authors afterwards. There’s even a free book club where a new book is read and discussed every month.

Babette’s
Babette’s is a very special kind of bookstore that absolutely had to be included, because I love stopping by and of course, I almost always leave with a book.
At Babette’s, everything revolves around cookbooks. And yes, I love cookbooks, especially baking books. You’ll find a beautiful selection of both here. There are books from all over the world and on all kinds of cooking techniques. Many of them are so beautifully designed that they double as décor in the kitchen. They also specialize in spices and their own spice blends.
There are two locations: one in Schleifmühlgasse in the Freihausviertel (which is also a lovely area for a stroll) and one in the inner city at Am Hof.
And something I really love and definitely want to try: the cooking classes at the Freihausviertel location. There are different themes, and they sound so interesting, also a great gift idea. From what I’ve seen, they tend to book out quickly, so it’s best to reserve in advance.
