Events in Vienna in September 2026


September is one of my favorite months in Vienna. Summer is not quite over yet, while the cozy autumn season is slowly beginning, and there are plenty of events happening again. You can look forward to festivals, culinary events, markets, sporting events, and lots of opportunities to spend some more time outdoors.

I have once again put together a mix of different events taking place in Vienna in September 2026, from major events to smaller ones that allow you to discover a different side of Vienna. As always, have fun exploring!

Festivals and Outdoor Events in Vienna in September 2026

Long Night of Vienna’s Markets
September 4, 2026

WHERE:
In addition to Vienna’s 17 permanent markets, the market area at Naschmarkt and three weekly markets (the organic farmers’ market at Freyung, Alszeilenmarkt, and Mazzuccomarkt in Seestadt) will be taking part.

WHAT TO EXPECT:
On this day, Vienna’s markets stay open longer, allowing you to stroll through the city’s different markets and shop until 11 pm. Alongside the market stalls, there will be a program with music, show acts, and entertainment for the whole family.

Zieglergasse Literature Mile

WHAT TO EXPECT:
For one day, the Zieglergasse Literature Mile is all about books, literature, and culture. Various restaurants, institutions, and stages along Zieglergasse become event venues and host readings, talks, and other activities. There is also a dedicated program for children at the Zieglergasse Children’s Island. The Literaturhaus Wien will be open from 2 – 6 pm and will also offer a program and a book flea market.

Vienna Fire Brigade Festival
September 11 to 13, 2026

Central Fire Station, Am Hof, 1010 Vienna

Free
WHAT TO EXPECT:
You can get an up-close look at the work of Vienna’s professional fire brigade. In addition to demonstrations, there are fire engines to explore, insights into the equipment, and various activities for visitors of all ages. Fire brigade divers, drone team, and rescue dog unit will also be there. In celebration of the 340th anniversary of Vienna’s professional fire brigade, there will also be an exhibition of historic fire engines and you can visit the Fire Brigade Museum.
MY TIP:
Especially if you are visiting with children, I would definitely put the Fire Brigade Festival on your list. The vehicles and demonstrations are sure to be a highlight, and you can even climb onto the ladder truck and “put out” a fire.

This festival is all about Austrian agriculture and forestry, with a varied program including a traditional costume show, agricultural machinery displays, vintage tractors, music, interactive activity stations, and food markets.

Flaniermarkt Neubaugasse

WHAT TO EXPECT:
Flaniermarkt including a flea market with hundreds of exhibitors along Neubaugasse, as well as a program featuring dance performances, walking acts, music, and more. There is also a children’s area at the corner of Richtergasse/Neubaugasse with an interactive reading concert, theater, and children’s concert.
MY TIP:
It’s best to come early in the morning, as it usually gets very crowded in the afternoon.

Wiener Kaiser Wiesn

Kaiserwiese in the Vienna Prater, 1020 Vienna
ADMISSION:
Free admission to the festival grounds and Wiesn Village.
Paid tickets are required for evening events in the festival tents.
WHAT TO EXPECT:
Every year, the Wiener Kaiser Wiesn brings Oktoberfest vibes to the Vienna Prater. In three large festival tents, as well as alpine huts and cabins in the outdoor area, you can enjoy live music, a party atmosphere, and food such as pork knuckle and grilled chicken, as well as drinks.
MY TIP:
If you have a dirndl or lederhosen at home, the Kaiser Wiesn is the perfect occasion to wear it again. Most visitors come dressed in traditional clothing, and somehow it just feels like part of the Wiesn atmosphere to me.

Mistfest (Waste Festival)
September 19 to 20, 2026

Free
WHAT TO EXPECT:
The MA 48 Mistfest is a family festival centered around waste, recycling, climate protection, and sustainability. There is a children’s flea market, music, exhibitions, demonstrations, a 48er-Tandler outlet, and numerous activities for children. The MA 48 vehicles are certainly among the highlights, but there is also a Ferris wheel, bouldering, a carousel, a flying fox, and a craft station.
MY TIP:
The name Mistfest (Waste Festival) might not sound particularly exciting at first, but especially if you are visiting with children, it is really worth a visit. The interactive stations and large vehicles make the topic of waste surprisingly entertaining.

Remasuri Street Festival

WHAT TO EXPECT:
For this street festival, Wollzeile becomes car-free for one day. You can get to know the traditional businesses along the street and there’s various stalls, music, artists, food, and a children’s program with a competition as well.
MY TIP:
Wollzeile is generally one of the streets I really enjoy walking along when exploring the city center. There are many interesting shops and lovely restaurants, so it is worth a visit even outside the event. All the more reason to enjoy seeing the street in a completely new atmosphere on this day.

260th Prater Anniversary Celebration

WHAT TO EXPECT:
The Vienna Prater is celebrating its 260th anniversary, and the occasion will be celebrated throughout an entire weekend. There will be many different activities and entertainment for children. More information will follow once the program has been published.
MY TIP:
You can also visit the Prater Museum for free throughout the entire weekend, where there will be a free program with guided tours, shows, and family activities.

Festivals and Music Events in Vienna in September 2026

Film Festival at Rathausplatz
Until September 6, 2026

WHAT TO EXPECT:
Until the beginning of September, Rathausplatz is transformed into a large open-air cinema. Every evening, the huge screen in front of City Hall shows music films from a wide variety of genres, from opera and classical music to pop and rock. There are also numerous food stalls offering Austrian and international cuisine.
MY TIP:
If you haven’t visited the Film Festival this summer yet, I would definitely make use of the last few days. In September, for example, you can see The Phantom of the Opera, the Rihanna London concert, and a delayed live broadcast of the Opera Air from the Vienna Burggarten.

Vienna State Opera Opera Air

To kick off the new season, the Vienna State Opera once again invites visitors to a large Opera Air concert in the Burggarten. The program features well-known works performed by international opera stars together with the orchestra and choir of the Vienna State Opera.

Musical Festival “We are Musical”

WHAT TO EXPECT:
At the beginning of the musical season, Vereinigte Bühnen Wien invites visitors to its annual Musical Festival. The program includes dance workshops, face painting for children, talks, a souvenir flea market, and more. Musical stars from VBW perform songs from well-known musicals on the open-air stage, and there is also a musical sing-along.
MY TIP:
There are usually special discounts for the current musicals during the Musical Festival. I will update the exact details as soon as the information is published.

During Vienna Wine Hiking Day, you can explore Vienna’s vineyards along four different routes, but you can also walk shorter sections. Along the way, you can visit numerous Viennese wineries and wine taverns, where wine and snacks are available. I especially love the viewpoints offering beautiful views over Vienna.
