Events in Vienna in August 2026
If you think Vienna slows down during the height of summer, think again! August is packed with amazing events, from open-air movie nights under the stars and cultural festivals to delicious food events and much more. To make planning your trip a little easier, I’ve put together some events happening across the city. I hope you’ll find something you’ll enjoy!

Open-Air Festivals & Events in Vienna in August 2026
Film Festival at Rathausplatz
until September 6, 2026


WHEN:
Saturday, July 4 to Sunday, September 6, 2026
11 am – Midnight

Free
WHAT TO EXPECT:
Every evening, a giant screen in front of Vienna City Hall shows a different music film, including pop, rock, classical music, musicals, jazz and blues (program). Every Sunday features performances from the Vienna State Opera, while Fridays at 6 pm are dedicated to the Children’s Opera Festival in the nearby Rathauspark.
The food area is just as impressive, with plenty of international and Austrian specialties to choose from, including Kaiserschmarrn, Teppanyaki, Greek and Mexican food, crêpes, waffles, cevapcici, schnitzel, kebabs and much more.

Lichterfest at the Old Danube

WHAT TO EXPECT:
As the sun goes down, the Old Danube transforms into a magical sea of lights. Beautifully decorated boats, live music, food and special events hosted by the lakeside restaurants create one of Vienna’s most romantic summer evenings.

Vienna Classic Days
August 22 & 23, 2026


WHEN:
Saturday, August 22 & Sunday, August 23, 2026
Classic car parade on Saturday from around 6 pm
WHERE:
The parade starts near Schwedenplatz and follows Vienna’s famous Ringstraße. You can stand anywhere along the Ringstraße. My favourite spots are along the Opernring, just after Operngasse. I especially love the view of the cars with the Vienna State Opera in the background. I also really like it along Universitätsring just after the Burgtheater.

Free for spectators
WHAT TO EXPECT:
Around 200 classic and vintage cars take part in this popular event. The highlight is the parade along the Ringstraße, which is closed to traffic while the cars complete two laps.

Kultursommer Wien

Throughout the summer, free open-air stages pop up all over Vienna, offering cabaret, live music, dance performances, theatre, literature and even circus shows. There are also family-friendly events, children’s performances and garden concerts at retirement homes.

A traditional fair dating back to the 18th century featuring market stalls, an opening ceremony, the raising of the Maypole (Hiatabaum), daily parades carrying the traditional winemakers’ crown (Hauerkrone), small rides for kids, live music, and special programs hosted by the various local Heurigen (wine taverns) along the street. Many visitors wear traditional Austrian clothing (Dirndl or Lederhosen).
